Waitress Aprons - A Personal Recollection

In the late 1970s in England, it was a very nice job indeed to work in one of the department store cafeterias. I had a job as a waitress in one of these stores, namely the Army and Navy Store. It sounds like it was something to do with the army but on the contrary; it was a rather plush department store and the place to shop in our local town.

We had all the lovely sections for shopping, like perfume and cosmetics, ladieswear, formalwear, wigs, beds, furniture, just about everything you could think of, like a small Harrods. Anyway I was a waitress in this store and as you can imagine I used to wear a very nice outfit in black and white. It involved a black dress with a fancy white frilly waitress apron. In this instance the apron was not intended to be very practical, instead it was supposed to look very traditional and set the scene for the cafeteria. I rather liked wearing this outfit apart from the daft doily thing they made you wear on your head. It rather ruined it for me.

Anyway, my duties involved making coffee and tea, serving cakes and sandwiches and generally looking after the appearance of the cafeteria and making sure the tables were kept clean and tidy for the customers.

At one stage whilst I worked there, I was invited to a fancy dress party and without a second thought I knew what I was going to wear. My uniform made the best classy French maid outfit I had ever seen so I didnt even have to hire anything that evening, as I remember I just borrowed my mums feather duster for the evening!

That was one of the best jobs that I ever had, I enjoyed it, the customers were great, the pay was good and the best part was that I got to dress up in this outfit with the lovely white frilly waitress apron every day!
